Ed Bland

About Ed Bland: Ed Bland (1926-2013) was an internationally known composer of jazz, soul, blues, pop, ragtime, dance, and contemporary classical music. His music is known for its hard-driving, confrontational quality as well as playfulness, humor and unpredictability. Bland arranged and composed for film, television, the recording industry, and orchestras.

Beyonce licensed his R&B soul classic “Skunk Juice” and Atari Games licensed another of his R&B pieces, “A Gritty Nitty.” Fat Boy Slim and Cypress Hill have sampled Bland’s works..

Ed Bland composed, arranged and produced for some of the greats, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Elvin Jones, Bunky Green, and James Moody. His concert music has been performed all over the world by the Baltimore, Detroit, Memphis, and St Louis Symphonies, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic, among others.

Osmund Music is the exclusive publisher of Ed Bland's music.

In the late 1930’s in Chicago, Ed Bland began music as a jazz protégé, playing clarinet and saxophone. He eventually turned to composition. In 1959, he produced the first Hip-Hop film, “THE CRY OF JAZZ.” Willard Van Dyke, pre-eminent American film documentarian and head of the Film Division of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, said that the CRY predicted the riots in American cities of the 1960s and ‘70s.
