Lukas Vesely

About Lukas Vesely: Lukas Vesely was born in Prague, Czech Republic and moved to the United States when he was only three years old. His father, also a wonderful musician in his own right, started Lukas out on piano at the age of six. Lukas later switched to bass and went on to play the Montreux and the North Sea jazz festivals while still in high-school. During this time he received many outstanding musicianship awards from the IAJE Jazz Festivals in America to the World of Music Festival in Los Angeles, Ca. At the end of high school, Lukas received a full tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma. and also became a faculty member at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. From his studies at Berklee and his teaching experience at Stanford, he has had the pleasure of working and learning from great jazz legends such as Joe Henderson, Ray Brown, and Marcus Belgrave, to contemporary jazz artists like Steve Coleman, Larry Grenadier, Phil Grenadier, Gregory Hutchinson and Oscar Stagnaro .

In 1998, Lukas traveled to Japan on an ambassador tour and performed at various venues including the world famous Star Eyes in Nagoya. Around this time Lukas also gained the opportunity to play with world-renowned classical clarinetist, Richard Stoltzman. With Richard, Lukas performed at the Hollywood Bowl with his son, Peter Stoltzman, a tremendous pianist in his own right, not to mention Alex Acuna(Weather Report) on drums.

One of Lukas’ recent engagements has been with a famous American West Coast based swing band called Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums. With this band, he has had the opportunity to play at the 2003 Montreux jazz festival as well as the Meridien Jazz Club in Paris in 2005. In 2006, he was invited back to Japan by a famous marimba player, Mika Yoshida to play a series of concerts in southern Japan.
On this tour, Lukas had the opportunity to team up with the great classical percussionist, Bill Cahn(Nexus) as well as with the great Richard Stoltzman and his son, Peter, once more.

Now in the beginning of 2007, Lukas is a part time member of the Peter Stoltzman Trio which has recently featured the great Bob Moses on drums. He just finished teaching at the 2006 Stanford Jazz Workshop. This experience included a concert in which he performed with his long time friend, Yosvanny Terry (Avishai Cohen, Bill Douglas, Steve Coleman) and the wonderful, Ndugu Chancelor(Weather Report, Michael Jackson) on drums.

He has an album out entitled, Peace Prayer, which features Scott E’Dog Petersen(J.C. Heard, Aretha Franklin) on sax and Jaz Sawyer(Abbey Lincoln, Irvin Mayfield) on drums.
